When a startup hits PMF early, or a leader rises fast or a strategy “just works,” we retroactively assign genius. The Feynman Point becomes: “We don’t notice randomness when it behaves. We worship it when it surprises.”
That ties beautifully into Fooled by Randomness territory of my idol Taleb. Humans cannot tolerate raw randomness. We sand it down into stories. Feynman joked about saying “and so on” as if π were rational. Executives do the same with success curves.
“We cracked it.”
“We finally understood the consumer.”
“Our culture did this.”
No. Nopes….. Nada……. You just hit a statistical anomaly and built a cathedral around it. The Feynman Point is a reminder that explanation often arrives after luck, not before.
In research, we sometimes discover:
A perfect segment
An unusually clean insight
A shockingly consistent finding
The danger is mistaking early convergence for deep truth. The Feynman Point is the moment where a researcher should pause and ask: “Is this signal… or just six consecutive nines?”
Early clarity is often the most dangerous form of noise.
When randomness flatters us early, we call it skill. When it humbles us later, we call it betrayal. The universe occasionally repeats itself six times in a row. That doesn’t mean it has started making promises.
Narrative Addiction: Why the Human Mind Cannot Leave Randomness Alone
There is a curious spot buried deep inside π. At the 762nd digit after the decimal, the number suddenly loses its composure and blurts out six consecutive 9s. Not five. Not four. Six.
Physicists call this the Feynman Point, named after Richard Feynman, who joked that he would memorize π up to that point and then say “and so on,” as if the irrational had finally surrendered to reason. The joke is funny for a reason deeper than humor. Because the moment those six 9s appear, something inside us stirs. We lean in. We feel meaning approaching.
And that instinct is exactly the problem.
The Human Allergy to Randomness
The Feynman Point is not remarkable mathematically. In an infinite random sequence, every pattern must eventually appear. Even the dramatic ones. What is remarkable is our reaction to it.
We don’t say, “Ah, randomness did its job.” We say, “Interesting… why here?” That “why” is the beginning of narrative addiction.
Humans are not pattern-seekers by accident. Evolution wired us to connect dots quickly. In the wild, assuming causality kept us alive far more often than it misled us. But in modern life, especially in business, leadership, research, and strategy, this same instinct quietly sabotages us.
We do not just observe outcomes. We romanticize them.
When Coincidence Starts Wearing a Crown
Six 9s appearing early in π feels special. Earlier than “chance would expect,” we are told. But chance does not “expect” anything. Probability has no calendar. Yet the moment an anomaly appears early, we upgrade it from coincidence to insight.
This is how:
A lucky product launch becomes “visionary leadership”
An early PMF becomes “deep customer understanding”
A fast career ascent becomes “exceptional judgment”
A clean research finding becomes “undeniable truth”
We mistake timing for talent, sequence for strategy, and survivorship for superiority. The story comes later. The applause comes immediately.
Corporate π and the Six 9s Syndrome
Every organization has its own Feynman Points.
A quarter where numbers align too neatly.
A segment that behaves too predictably.
A leader whose decisions seem uncannily right, again and again (or wrong and wrong again too).
At that moment, something dangerous happens. Instead of asking, “How fragile is this?” We ask, “How do we scale this story?” Decks are built. Frameworks are named. Success is reverse-engineered into inevitability.
Randomness is quietly escorted out of the room. This is not strategy. This is mythology.
Why Narratives Feel Safer Than Uncertainty
Randomness is cognitively expensive. It offers no villains, no heroes, no lessons we can reuse tomorrow morning. Narratives do.
Narratives promise:
Control
Repeatability
Moral clarity
Professional legitimacy
They allow us to say, “This worked because…”. Instead of the more honest, “This worked this time.” Narrative addiction is not about lying. It is about overfitting meaning to limited data.
Just like mistaking six 9s for destiny.
The Researcher’s Quiet Temptation
This is where the danger sharpens. In research, the most seductive moment is not ambiguity. It is early clarity.
A segment pops cleanly.
A driver explains too much variance.
A story flows without resistance.
That is when discipline matters most. Because early coherence often has the same statistical status as the Feynman Point. Impressive. Unlikely. And entirely capable of misleading you.
A good researcher asks, “Is this signal?” A great researcher asks, “What would randomness look like if it were flattering me?” Most careers are built by the former. Most disasters are authored by forgetting the latter.
Leadership and the Myth of “It Had to Be Me”
Leaders are especially vulnerable to narrative addiction because the system rewards confidence, not epistemic humility. When things go right, the organization demands explanation. Silence looks incompetent. Caution looks weak.
So leaders narrate.
“I trusted my instinct.”
“I saw what others missed.”
“We stayed the course.”
Sometimes this is true. Often, it is just six 9s in a row. The tragedy is not that leaders benefit from luck. The tragedy is that they forget luck was ever in the room.
The Cost of Believing Your Own Story
Narrative addiction has a delayed price. It shows up when:
Conditions change
Tailwinds reverse
Variance returns to its natural state
Suddenly, the same strategy “stops working.” The same leader “loses touch.” The same insight “doesn’t replicate.”
We call it disruption.
Or market cyclicality.
Or execution failure.
Rarely do we call it what it often is: The end of a lucky streak we mistook for law.
A Different Kind of Intelligence
Feynman’s joke was not about arrogance. It was about humility disguised as wit. He knew that saying “and so on” would be absurd precisely because π never settles. It never promises consistency.
Neither do markets.
Neither do people.
Neither does success.
The highest form of intelligence today is not storytelling skill. It is story resistance. The ability to say:
“This worked, but I don’t yet know why”
“This pattern may not survive repetition”
“This success does not entitle me to certainty”
That restraint looks unimpressive on LinkedIn. But it is the only thing that compounds.
The Aphorism the Universe Keeps Repeating
The universe occasionally repeats itself six times in a row. That does not mean it has started making promises. The moment we understand this, we stop worshipping outcomes and start respecting uncertainty. And paradoxically, that is when our decisions get better. Not because randomness disappears.
