(and why that secretly annoys everyone in the room)
People think researchers are trained to find answers. No. We’re trained to find “most likely answers… depending on conditions… assuming a normal Tuesday.” We live in probability. Everyone else lives in PowerPoint. And that clash creates most of the trauma in corporate meeting rooms.
1. “Give me one final number.” - Corporate’s favourite fantasy
Somewhere in every company, there is always that one person who says: “Don’t give me ranges. Give me one final number.”
Bhai… if life worked like that, astrologers would be running SEBI. Even Google Maps - with all its satellites and AI - still tells you: “You’ll reach between 23 to 34 minutes… depending on vibes.”
But inside a boardroom, the expectation is: “Will this work - yes or no?” As if consumers line up every morning and brief us about their future behaviour. We work with distributions. Companies prefer destiny.
2. Why researchers talk like weather reporters
Our entire training system is built around uncertainty:
Humans lie in surveys - sometimes to be polite, sometimes to avoid counter quesions.
Markets behave like mood swings.
Sample sizes never behave as cleanly as sample-size formulas.
Correlation/causation confusion is practically a national sport.
So we respond in probabilities. But because probability sounds less sexy than certainty, we get labelled as:
“Too cautious”
“Too theoretical”
“Too many ifs and buts”
Arre baba, ifs-and-buts hi toh real world hai.
3. Real-world cases: Even the giants deal in probability
a) Netflix thought they knew what people wanted. Turns out, people don’t even know what they want. A huge chunk of viewing behaviour is random: bored, sleepy, breakup, Sunday sadness, accidental autoplay. Netflix now uses probability bands, not “perfect prediction.”
b) McKinsey churn models are basically: “Here are the people most likely to ghost you.” No model says who will churn. Only who may probably be thinking about it while brushing their teeth.
c) Google Maps ETA = probability + hope. If Google can’t predict traffic with certainty, your 200-respondent dipstick surely can’t predict the fate of a new marketing campaign.
4. The real researcher skill: Updating priors without losing your sanity
A mature researcher doesn’t chase truth like some spiritual thesis. We simply update our belief system every time new data shows up. In corporate terms:
“I wasn’t wrong. The probability just… evolved.”
This is how you stay sane while everyone else keeps asking, “So what’s the one answer?”

Companies that insist on perfect answers end up manufacturing… fiction.
a) Confirmation Bias Productions™
People only show numbers that match the boss’s prediction. Everything else gets archived under “miscellaneous”.
b) False Precision Circus
Teams debate whether the score is 4.32 or 4.28. Reality: both numbers are equally meaningless without context.
c) Decision Overconfidence
This is why brilliant companies sometimes collapse - they assume the world will behave exactly as their spreadsheet.
d) Hero or Villain Culture
If you ask for binary answers, you also create binary blame. Probability makes decision-making more adult. Certainty makes it childish.
6. Probability actually makes decisions faster
Executives often think ranges slow things down. No - ranges sharpen choices. Probability-thinking forces questions like:
“What outcome is most likely?”
“What’s the worst that could happen?”
“What signals should we track?”
Suddenly, the strategy becomes: “Make the best bet today, update tomorrow, repeat.” Welcome to grown-up planning.
7. What leaders should actually ask researchers
Instead of: “Give me the final answer.” Ask:
“What is the distribution telling us?”
“Which variables can swing this?”
“What’s our confidence band?”
“What early warning signs should we monitor?”
“If this were your own money, where would you bet?”
That last question is where pure math becomes business judgement. And judgement is the real output of research.
8. Closing: Certainty is comfort. Probability is competence.
Life is probabilistic. Markets are probabilistic. Consumers are probabilistic. Your own boss’s weekend mood is probabilistic. Researchers don’t eliminate uncertainty. We simply make it navigable. And once you internalise probability-thinking, something magical happens:
You make better decisions.
You build resilient strategies.
You avoid dumb confidence.
And ironically…
You start sounding more certain - because you finally understand the uncertainty.
